Your Proof of Permanent Residency in Canada

Once you become a permanent resident of Canada, your journey doesn’t end there—it begins a new chapter. The Permanent Resident (PR) Card is an essential document that proves your status in Canada and allows you to travel internationally with ease. At AMPS Law, we help new and existing permanent residents apply for, renew, or replace their PR cards with confidence.

What is a Permanent Resident Card?

The Permanent Resident Card is an official, wallet-sized document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It serves as proof of your permanent resident status and is required for re-entry into Canada via commercial travel (plane, train, bus, or boat).

When Do You Need a PR Card?

You’ll need a valid PR card to:

  • Re-enter Canada after traveling abroad

  • Prove your immigration status when applying for jobs, health coverage, or social services

  • Renew or apply for Canadian citizenship

  • Replace a lost, expired, or stolen card

PR Card Validity and Renewal

  • A PR card is typically valid for five years.

  • You must apply for renewal before it expires to maintain uninterrupted proof of status.

  • If you lose your card or it’s stolen/damaged, you must apply for a replacement as soon as possible.

Note: Your PR status does not expire if your PR card does—but you may face difficulty traveling without one.
